Dietary fat doesn’t inherently make you fat. It’s calorie-dense, sure, but it’s also satiating and essential for hormone production, brain health, and nutrient absorption. Sugar, on the other hand, spikes insulin, promotes fat storage, and messes with hunger signals, leading to overeating. Studies like those from the CDC show obesity rates in the U.S. climbing from 13% in the 1960s to nearly 42% by 2018, correlating with the rise of low-fat, high-sugar diets. The Framingham Heart Study and others have also linked high sugar intake to heart disease more than fat ever did.
But trying to stop eating sugar is hard, this study along with many studies show that sugar is highly addictive more so than cocaine. Rats addicted to cocaine prefer sugar over cocaine.

So what is the answer? Start by eliminating soda like coke. Cut down on sweets like pie, cake or cookies, you don’t have to go cold turkey it just won’t work, know that your body and your gut bacteria are addicted to sugar. As you slowly wean yourself off of sugar you will eventually find that the craving is less as we kill off excess bacteria that live off of sugar. Start replacing snacks with nuts or berries and you will achieve your goal. Don’t beat yourself up if you must have a soda, just understand that this is an addiction and you are going to kick this habit and take control of your life again.
